What kind of friend is George to Lennie?

Choose one of the quotations from our whole-class quote bank (it can be from any chapter you like) and use it to answer this question using PEE and then post it as a comment on this post. Try to link your analysis to the context of the novel - the Great Depression and the situation that George and Lennie are in.

  1. In 'Of Mice and Men', George is portrayed as a caring friend towards Lennie, as he tries to comfort him by dreaming about a beautiful future.
    'We're gonna work a ranch like like the one we came up north.'
    George uses the word 'gonna' as a blunt estimate of when they will have a better lifestyle. During the Depression, many people dreamed helplessly of a life in which they did not live in poverty, and fantasized of money and a permanent house. The migrating workers, such as George and Lennie, would have dreamed sentences such as this constantly. Also, as Lennie has mental issues, George does not use very descriptive words and brings forward simple goals, almost dreaming for both himself and Lennie.
