How does Barack Obama try to unite the nation in his presidential victory speech?

  1. 'We knew that little girl could of been our own'
    includes audience by using the pronoun 'we'
    shows the unity that Americans have for one another and the compassion and empathy for others circumstances as they know it could of been them. it also uses emotive language to convey the sadness of the story

  2. 'Tonight you voted for action ... You elected to focus on your jobs, not ours'
    This is use of second person he uses this to address the audience. By repeating the word 'you' it shows that he is interacting with the audience and that he wants to get them involved. By doing this he is uniting the nation and showing that his plans for the future are going to affect him as well as everybody else.

    This uses second person which involves the audience with the speech and shows that he doesn't believe that he could do it without the support, help and guidance of the American population. Also this uses emotive language as it shows that they're moving forward and into a better position as a country.

  4. he uses repeated phrases such as "we want" making it a rule of three and repetition. This engages the audience and makes them feel like they can stand by him as they try and achieve their goals together.

    Obama uses the word 'more' and the powerful words like 'determined' and 'inspired' to tell the audience that his opinion is fact and that he wants to be the best president that he can be. (Group 5 paragraph 21)

  6. the repetition of 'hope' and hopeful' makes the audience feel involved and therefore feel like they have to try their best to make the country a better place.
    "I've never been more hopeful about our future. I've never been more hopeful about America". This shows that future that he has in plan for the country, will hopefully unite the nation as he has stated in his victory speech.

  7. 'This country has more wealth than any nation, but thats not what makes us rich. We have the most powerful military in history, but thats not what makes us strong. Our university, our culture are all the envy of the world, but thats not what keeps the world coming to our shores'

    This is rule of three and by using this Barack Obama is describing the three aspects of America he is the most proud of. By repeating the word 'our' Obama is uniting the people of America to be proud of the country they live in. He wants them to feel proud of what he has achieved.

    This use of humour builds a relationship with the audience by connecting with them and involving them in his life. This makes the nation feel as though they know their president better and are one with him. It also builds trust between them.

Also the use of the word "we" involves the audience and presents Obama as an including president. (Group 5 paragraph 18)

  11. "We are, and forever will be, the United States of America." The is an example of Obama including the audience and making them feel like an important part of the country. Obama chooses to use the term "United States of America" rather than just "America". This implies that all of the states are vital to making the country run smoothly and Obama is attempting to make them feel important to him and the country.
